One thing I know is that finding out how other students have handled exams is a great way to help you build your own tailored study plan. Statistics don't lie - if lots of other students struggle to pass an exam, the likelihood is you will also need to study extra hard for it.
As we enter into the final months of 2017, now is the perfect time to look back at how students have performed with CIMA this year . The following Operational CIMA results can show you how to tailor your own revision patterns to ensure CIMA success at Operational level...

Here's how to study away from your laptop...
Sometimes it feels as though students' other commitments prevent them from studying as hard as they should. Well, this doesn't have to be the case - not all CIMA revision has to be done at a desk. In fact, you can learn well no matter where you happen to be, as long as you are prepared.

Here's why continuous studying is not a good plan...
Working life can be
stressful enough without the burden of CIMA exams. While trying to
juggle other responsibilities, it’s incredibly easy for working
CIMA students to think ‘I can always do my revision another time’.
But can you leave your revision until the last minute and
still get the results you want from your CIMA exams?

6 ways to significantly improve your work life balance
Juggling work, revision and home life is the single biggest challenge for many CIMA students.
I was recently counseling a CIMA student who was struggling with getting this balance right. He was a committed rugby player as well as a father of two small children. Combined with a busy job in the finance team of a large multi-national corporation, his CIMA revision seemed like a step too far in his busy schedule. He found that not only was his revision going badly, he was not managing any of the key parts of his life successfully. He was heading for problems!
This reminded me of many conversations I have had with Accountancy students over the 15 years I've been teaching.
Of course there is no simple answer, but there are some steps that can be followed to help students to get the balance right and be successful in their CIMA exams.
Here are my six key tips:

Model, Average or Disaster Student... Which one are you?
People regularly use the term “The Model Student” within the education industry when describing what the ideal student would do when passing their exams with top marks.
However, the idea of the model student can seem a bit out of reach for some students, as they may think that they will never get to that level.
I wanted to explore the idea of the model student therefore, in order to try and work out what really makes the perfect student within the accountancy world, with the hope of potentially inspiring a few students to reach that little bit further within their own studies to achieve the best that they possibly can.
To start off with however, we need to give the model student term a little bit more context. So let's first look at what makes an average student.

Keeping your eye on the prize...
Passing through the CIMA exams is tough. That's why you need to make sure you have something you are striving for.
Of course becoming CIMA qualified is the first thing you will think about.
But why do you want to become CIMA qualified? Where do you see yourself in five years?
During the periods where revision is tough, or you are struggling to get through a particular exam, you'll need to have that vision to keep you going.

OCS February Examiner's Report - What Can We Learn?
One of the best ways to prepare for a future exam is to look at what the examiner's have to say about a previous sitting.
After each Case Study sitting the examiner's write a report of what they noticed and what tips they would give to future students.
Here is a summary of some of the key themes from the February report:
Pre-seen Preparation
One of the key points raised by the examiners is the importance of getting to know the pre-seen:
"Preparation on the pre-seen material is vital. Ensure that you are very familiar with the business, especially the financial information, before the exam as this will help you with applying your knowledge and will save you time. Similarly, an awareness of the industry that the business is in will help you to think of the wider issues that might impact on decisions that you could be asked to comment on."

Operational Level 2015 - Pass Rates
2015 was expected to be a difficult year with the introduction of the new syllabus.
However, many students performed well considering the change. There were those who might have been a little apprehensive or not as accepting at the start, with some students having studied with CIMA (and the old syllabus) for a long time.
Objective Test Pass Rates
As you can see though, the official results below give a good indication of how operational OT students have performed between January and December 2015:

Tips for Effective Industry Research
Today I came across an old article from one of our many esteemed affiliates, Matthew Evans. The article is centred around 5 tips for the best approach to take when analysing the case study industry.
Although the article relates specifically to the old T4 exam, the principles remain the same for the OCS. The industry analysis is an important part of the case studies now, with recent examiner's reports referring directly to the proper use of industry analysis within the exams. Although the company is at the centre of the case study, with a little bit of industry information provided alongside this, the examiners have highlighted the importance of not simply reciting the information found in the case study.

Ethical Thinking - Corporate Social Responsibility
In
recent years organisations have put tremendous amounts of time, money
and effort into ensuring that their corporate image and reputations
are better than they have ever been!
However,
as onlookers it can be hard to distinguish between those who do this
simply to appear as socially responsible as possible to potential
investors, customers or the general public, and between those who
genuinely believe that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an
important, ethical and moral part of their organisational culture,
and something that they truly believe in.
"Corporate
social responsibility is about how the company acts towards the
community and environment in which it operates. CSR focuses
on ethical business management through ways that improve
and protect the environment and social relations and supply a
positive public image."

Operational Case Study Student Survey!
It's
been over a week since the final day of the operational case study
exams finished and we have been getting lots of feedback from our
students about how well they felt their exams went.
Within
this article I would like to share with your some of that feedback,
hopefully providing some sort of reassurance to those who felt
similarly about the exam, or a little guidance to those looking to
take part in the next exam in February.
We'll
start of with the positives...
